Depression Suicide

Most people tend to take for granted suicide attempts by thinking that an individual who is committing suicide just needs attention when, in fact, most of these attempts have underlying motives that are much more complicated than what we first surmise. Depression suicide has to be prevented in such a way that the causes of depression are being addressed.

Depressive symptoms are further aggravated by substance abuse, history of mental problems, violence, and suicide attempts in the family, and other stressors. Most extreme cases of depression can only boil down to suicide especially if the individual has prior suicide attempts, available fire arms or poisonous substance at home, and exposure to violence in the family, among peers or as publicized in the media.

The link between depression and suicide is exemplified in various studies conducted in different parts of the world. In United States, for example, 11% of the population has experienced bouts of depression while suicide is the ninth leading cause of death in the country having 32,000 completed suicide deaths yearly.

The condition in ten countries in Eastern Europe is much the same. More than 27 suicide deaths were purported for every 100,000 individuals. All in all, 2005 saw that 1.4% of deaths across the world were attributed to suicide. Not withstanding the fact that there are significant numbers of unreported suicide cases most especially in Muslim and Latin American areas.

Those who have suicidal tendencies were diagnosed with mental disorders, substance abuse and depressive symptoms. It was found out that two-thirds of those who have depression suicide have seen a physician or therapist a month before their death, only, it was all too late. This goes to show that depressed people who have suicidal tendencies do seek for help. If a friend or family member talks about how depressed they are, always take time to listen.
