Depression Counselling
Treating the symptoms of depression through medication is different from overcoming depression permanently. With the former, there is a risk that once you stop the medication, the symptoms will return. To eliminate depression for good, depression counselling is prescribed alongside medication.
The aim of depression counselling is to inform the patient about there situation to recognize what exactly he or she has to do to prevent the onset of another depressive episode. Therapists and counselors also encourage the patient to gain new skills, feel happy about themselves and get along with other people to change the emotions, thoughts and behaviors that could have led them to depression.
Counseling focuses on different aspects of a patient’s life to help them overcome depression. Behavioral therapy is one way to correct the symptoms of depression in a patient. This therapy utilizes different tools to help the patient cope up with depression by altering there behavior. It is founded on the principle that a person’s well-being depends chiefly on what they do and not on the inner workings of there mind.
However, recent studies show that behavior alone does not amount to the causes of depression. Health experts are saying that depressive emotions may come from thoughts as well. Fear of heights, for example, can come from the idea of standing on the edge of an elevated area and not actually experiencing such. In cognitive therapy, the approach is to teach the patient how to challenge depressive thoughts.
Both behavioral and cognitive approaches to depression counselling are effective methods to help the patient overcome depression. More importantly, the therapy can only be effective once you get to know the causes of depression to identify the appropriate solution. Most mental health experts utilize hybrid therapy sessions to tap both cognitive and behavioral factors of depression in counseling. Although these are more than enough to overcome depression, social support system is still necessary for the treatment to be long-lasting.
