Child Depression

Any parent would always go to great lengths just to ensure the good health of their children. They want their children to be free from any disorder. But what if the disorder that is affecting one’s child is something that is not easily identifiable such as child depression? Here is a useful guide for parents.

There are signs and symptoms that will help identify child depression that falls into the following categories: (1) cognitive; (2) emotional; (3) behavioral, and (4) physical.

Cognitive signs of depression include engaging in negative thoughts frequently. Your child may have lost self-esteem and has a penchant for blaming one’s self for things he or she has done wrong (perceived and imaginary). They can get overly sensitive especially when teased by peers.

Emotional depression includes a feeling of melancholy. The child seems to be withdrawn and may cry readily. There are times when the child gets anxious, panicky, or nervous and loses there interest to things they previously enjoy doing.
Behavioral symptoms include the child getting disruptive in class and may show weird behavior. Some will even go to the extent of inflicting self-harm.

Physical signs include sudden weight loss or weight gain, change in eating habits, change in sleeping patterns, and the child may suddenly be less playful than usual.

If you think that your child is suffering from depression, you have to immediately seek help. You also have to reassure your child of your love, care, and guidance, and that what he or she is going through is something that is not isolated.

It is also necessary to have your child seen by a physician to get correct diagnosis of the depression. From there, you can decide the most effective child depression treatment available that is suited to the requirements of the condition of your child. When choosing from the available treatments, you must use your good judgment and consider all factors including any adverse effect they may have on your child.
